American Goulash is a dish that originated in the Midwest, and falls into what Rachael Ray would call a “stoup” – a mix of stew and soup. The macaroni really bulks up the dish so that you can feed a crowd with just one pound of ground beef.
American Goulash is different from traditional Hungarian Goulash. While both dishes are referred to as “goulash,” American Goulash is a quick and budget-friendly pasta dish with ground beef, while Hungarian Goulash is a slow-cooked meat stew with an emphasis on paprika and spices.

Why You’ll Love This Easy Instant Pot Goulash
- It’s so easy to make. You don’t need to be a skilled chef or have a lot of special ingredients to make a classic dish that everyone can enjoy.
- The Instant Pot Goulash has such an amazing taste. It’s cheesy, hearty, and full of flavor, which makes it perfect for lunch or dinner.
- You can reheat this meal in the microwave and have leftovers for days! It tastes just as good reheated as it does when you’ve first prepared it.
Ingredients
Ground Beef – Use one pound of ground beef to prepare this goulash. I generally use 80/20 ground beef, but use your preferred or what you have on hand.
Diced Onion – Feel free to use white or yellow onion, whatever you prefer or already have on hand. Dice your onion into small pieces.
Diced Tomatoes – Use a 15-ounce can of petite diced tomatoes to add more flavor to this dish.
Beef Broth – Enhance the flavor of this dish with a bit of beef broth for a more savory taste. You could use beef bouillon cubes and water or just water, as well.
Shredded Cheese – You’ll need one cup of shredded cheese. I like to use mild cheddar or colby-jack.
Dried Pasta – You will need 10 ounces of your favorite short pasta. Feel free to use elbow macaroni, rotini or fusilli. Spaghetti and other long pasta is not ideal for this recipe.
Additional ingredients needed to prepare the Instant Pot American Goulash include Worcestershire sauce, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
