I love the convenience of seasoning blends, but they can get pretty expensive and you may have to contend with additives and anti-caking ingredients.

The best part of making this seasoning at home is that you get to control the ingredients.  Use what you have on hand or customize the ingredients to your preference.  For example, I hate how the poppy seeds get stuck in my teeth, so I prefer to go a little lighter on those and go heavy on the onion and garlic for extra flavor.

The recipe below is a classic ratio of the ingredients and feel free to play around with them to suit your preferences.

Ingredients

  • Poppy seeds – Adds a nutty crunch to your seasoning blend.
  • Black sesame seeds – Gives a more earthy, nutty flavor to the spice blend.
  • White sesame seeds – Brings a toasty flavor with a hint of sweetness.
  • Dried minced onion – Provides the classic onion flavor and a satisfying crunch. You may substitute onion powder in a pinch.
  • Dried minced garlic – Another classic flavor, you can also substitute garlic powder if you don’t have dried flakes.
  • Course salt – Use your favorite course salt, flaky sea salt or Kosher salt. The course texture stands up to the other ingredients. If you only have table salt, decrease the measurement to 1/2-1 teaspoon.

You can buy all of these ingredients from the bulk spices section of your grocery store so that you don’t need to invest in full size jars of each ingredient.

How to Make Everything Bagel Seasoning

  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix until well combined.
  2. Transfer the mixture to an airtight container for storage.
  3. Store in a cool, dry place for up to 3 months or in the refrigerator for maximum freshness.

Variations

  • Swap flaky sea salt for kosher salt for a different texture.
  • Add dried dill for a fresh herbal kick.
  • Mix in red pepper flakes for a spicy twist.
  • Experiment with different ratios to find your perfect blend of flavors.

Recipe Tips

  • Toast the sesame seeds for a richer flavor.
  • Use parchment paper for easy cleanup when mixing the ingredients. You can even use the parchment paper to pour the seasoning mix into your jar or container.
  • Adjust the salt level to your preference for a personalized seasoning blend.

Salt-Free Version: Looking to cut down on sodium? Simply omit the course salt from the recipe for a salt-free version of this homemade seasoning blend.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons poppy seeds
  • 1 Tablespoon white sesame seeds
  • 1 Tablespoon black sesame seeds
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons dried minced onion
  • 1 Tablespoon dried minced garlic
  • 1/2 Tablespoon course salt or flaky sea salt or Kosher salt

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a bowl or jar with a lid.
  • Stir or shake to combine. Alternatively, you can combine all ingredients on a sheet of parchment paper and then use the parchment paper to pour the mixed spices into a jar.
  • Store in a sealed container in your pantry for up to three months.

Notes

This recipe is a guideline. If you don't have a certain ingredient, like black sesame seeds, simply increase the amount of white sesame seeds. If you find that you prefer less poppy seeds, feel free to cut back on them.
It is important to use course salt or flaky sea salt in this recipe because it will hold up to the other ingredients. If you only have table salt, decrease the amount to 1/2 to 1 teaspoon.
