Why You’ll Love this Recipe

  • Quick and Easy – on the table in less than 30 minutes!
  • Just 6 Budget-Friendly ingredients!
  • Kid-tested and approved!! Kids and adults alike will love these pizza pinwheels. Perfect for packed lunches or a game-day snack!

Ingredients

Crescent Dough: find this next to the biscuits in the refrigerated section of your grocery store. Feel free to cut the recipe in half and use 1 can of dough.

Tomato Sauce: you whatever tomato sauce you have – open an 8 ounce can or use some spaghetti sauce from the jar. Feel free to doctor it up with a little garlic powder and onion powder for even more zip.

Mozzarella Cheese: For our pizza pinwheels, I recommend mozzarella. If you’re getting creative and want to try other fillings, and good melty cheese will work well. And you can shred your own or use pre-shredded.

Mini Pepperonis: Yes, you can buy mini pepperonis and yes they are a little more expensive. But they are the perfect size for these bite-size crescent pinwheels. Feel free to chop regular or turkey pepperoni to save money for just a little more effort.

ingredients for pizza pinwheels: crescent dough, mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese, italian seasoning, mini pepperonis, and tomato sauce

Equipment

  • Half-Sheet Baking Pan
  • (Optional) Parchment Paper
  • Dental floss or a knife: for slicing the pinwheels
  • Can Opener
  • Spoon or Spatula: for spreading pizza sauce

How to Make Crescent Pinwheels

  1. When handling the dough, be gentle. Press all the seams together to create one rectangle of dough.
  2. Then, spread on your sauce and top with cheese and pepperonis.
  3. From a long edge, gently roll the crescent dough into a log like you would a cinnamon roll.
  4. Using a sharp knife or dental floss, slice each log into 6-8 pinwheels.
    • I find that dental floss helps create a clean cut without damaging the roll.
    • Take your floss and pull it under the crescent dough log, holding each end of the floss in each hand.
    • Cross the floss over the log and pull tight with your opposite hand to pull the floss through the roll.
  5. Place pinwheels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 15-17 minutes. The dough will be golden brown.
  6. Allow to cool for a few minutes so that you don’t burn your mouth on the cheese. Enjoy your pepperoni pizza crescent pinwheels with more tomato sauce (or ranch for my midwest girlies!)

  • 1 knife or dental floss (to slice)
  • parchment paper optional

Ingredients

  • 2 cans crescent dough
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 cup mozzarella shredded
  • 5 ounces pepperoni mini or chopped
  • 1 Tbsp parmesan cheese grated
  • 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit

  • Spread 1/4 cup of tomato sauce on each rolled out crescent dough (more if you like more saucy pinwheels).
  • Tip with mozzarella cheese and mini (or chopped) pepperoni.
  • Carefully roll the crescent dough in a log, rolling from a long end.
  • Slice each roll in to 6-8 pinwheels
  • Place the sliced pinwheels on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
  • Top with a sprinkle of italian seasoning and grated parmesan.
  • Bake for 15-17 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and serve with the remaining tomato sauce.

Notes

Feel free to swap out the filling ingredients for any number of things.  This recipe is super low-maintenance with no precooking required, but you could absolutely use cooked chicken or cooked ground beef as a filling for these crescent pinwheels.
Allow to cool completely before storing leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge with a piece of paper towel in the container to absorb any excess moisture.  This will keep your pinwheels flakier when reheating.
To reheat, microwave for 60-90 seconds or until heated through.
